Well, to start, we do know that Nike’s “Back to the Future” Shoes are now the world’s most expensive sneakers.
These self-lacing sneakers hit the stores on November 28, 2016.
In order to celebrate the film, Back to the Future, Nike essentially created an actual working pair of the self-lacing sneakers from the 80s classic, called the Nike Mags.
In fact, a pair of the Nike Mags was recently auctioned off in Hong Kong. The shoes sold for $104,000.00, creating a new worldwide record for the most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold at auction. The last I knew, the buyer of the sneakers currently remains anonymous, most likely for their own safety. As of now, only 89 pairs of these sneakers were made and I’m sure there are many people would do anything to own a pair. There have also been many other auctions held.
The shoe, which retails at $720.00, is Nike’s “first step into the future of adaptive performance,” as stated by Nike. How does it work? The hi-top sneaker will sense how snug it should be laced to your foot, without you having to tighten or loosen the shoe yourself.
This is all being done to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for the research of Parkinson’s disease. It is said that the Nike Mag has already raised over $6.75 million for the foundation.
If you didn’t manage to get a pair of the 89, you will have to settle for Nike’s other impending innovation of self-lacing sneakers called Nike HyperAdapt. No, it’s not the same and they don’t look exactly like the movie prop, but pretty cool just the same.
You can even get an imitation pair for your kids for Halloween or just to kick around. Check these out.
Rest assured that if you can’t afford the real thing, I’m sure that in the near future this will be all we will be able to buy, and the days of lacing your shoes will be long gone.
